CAST IRON DRUMS

Cast iron drums—ideal crane drums for light-duty lifting, offering durability, low noise, and cost efficiency.

  • Material: Gray Cast Iron HT200 (standard), Ductile Cast Iron QT400-15 (optional for higher toughness)
  • Manufacturing: Centrifugal Casting — ensures dense, uniform structure & superior wear resistance
  • Diameter:φ300 mm to φ800 mm (custom sizes available)
  • Length: 1,000 mm to 4,000 mm
  • Rope Groove: Precision-machined double-lead or helical grooves; surface finish Ra ≤ 6.3 μm
  • Heat Treatment: Stress-relief annealing (standard); optional surface hardening for high-cycle applications
  • Key Advantage: Excellent vibration damping & self-lubricating properties — minimizes wire rope wear and noise, ideal for light- to medium-duty cranes

Note: Centrifugal casting eliminates porosity and segregation, significantly improving fatigue life vs. sand-cast alternatives.

CAST IRON DRUMS FOR LIGHT-DUTY LIFTING

Key Advantages of Cast Iron Drums

  • Excellent Wear Resistance & Vibration Damping
Gray cast iron contains flake graphite, providing natural self-lubrication. This reduces wire rope wear and ensures smoother, quieter crane operation.
  • Superior Castability & Cost Efficiency
Easily molded into complex shapes (e.g., precision rope grooves, flanges, stiffening ribs), making it ideal for medium-to-large drums in batch production.
  • High Rigidity & Compressive Strength
Maintains dimensional stability under rope tension and cyclic bending loads—ensuring consistent rope alignment and winding accuracy.

⚠️ Note: Cast iron has lower tensile strength and impact toughness than forged or welded steel. It is not recommended for high-speed, high-impact, or extreme low-temperature applications—where steel drums (welded or forged) are preferred.

All items undergo thorough inspection and testing at every stage of the workflow—and again after final production—to ensure only the highest-quality products reach the market.

How do cast iron drums compare to steel drums?

Feature
Cast Iron Drums
Steel Drums
Best for
Light- to medium-duty, low-speed
Heavy-duty, high-cycle, high-impact
Noise/Vibration
Lower (graphite damping)
Higher (requires external pads)
Cost
Lower (especially for complex shapes)
Higher (welding, machining, NDT)
Weight
Heavier (benefits stability in light cranes)
Lighter (better for high-speed systems)
Repairability
Limited (not weldable)
Repairable/weldable

→ Choose cast iron for economy and quiet operation; choose steel for maximum strength and flexibility in demanding service.
